Heh, I guess I should have said they used to give me problems. =) A couple of years back, I found another post on here that gave some Perl code to handle them, and I was able to adapt that to PHP. If I need to import the DB to a spreadsheet, I usually just go in and manually delete those three items (along with a few thousand others so it fits in Excel's 65K record limit); they're almost never relevant to what I need.

    The dumps (and EQ back when it sent the serialized item data as text) use '\' to escape special characters just like C and most other programming languages do.

In loaditems.pl the official import script for the nightly database dumps, I specifically have it split on '|' characters that are not immediately preceded by a '\' character. This isn't entirely ideal since it would miss the case of an item name ending with '\\' that is, a literal '\' which is being escaped. However it was simple to implement in perl and it gets the job done.

    Those three items are a pain; I know they give me headaches every time I try to import the DB into a spreadsheet or my own database. The good news is that there are already a few solutions for how to handle them programmatically. Sounds like you have to update your import code.

    You're correct; that's actually a snippet of code I cobbled together from a couple of other, much larger scripts that I use. The earlier parts of those scripts validate recommended and required levels. To be complete, I guess you'd have to insert a check before PreRound to cap the CharLevel at RecLevel.

I'm not sure what you mean about setting stats to zero. Do you mean that if a player dies and delevels, yet is still wearing an item with a required level above his current level, the item will have zero stats? That would be beyond the scope of just calculating the impact of the recommended level; that gets into how you handle the required level.

    It's actually a bit more complicated, due to at least two issues I've found.

1) If a stat would come out to x.5 (like 19.5 or 217.5), EQ rounds *down*, not up. For any other value, it rounds normally.

2) Recommended stats always have a minimum value of 1.

Here's some Javascript that I use.

Code:

function RecLevelRound( num, CharLevel, RecLevel )
{
   PreRound = num * CharLevel / RecLevel;
   if (PreRound - Math.floor(PreRound) == 0.5)
      PreMax = Math.floor(PreRound);
   else
      PreMax = Math.round(PreRound);
   return Math.max(PreMax, 1);
}

I haven't tested this code with negative numbers, though. I'm not sure how EQ rounds those.
