server that runs EQItems.
Why?
The server that hosts EQItems (13th-floor.org) is a 1.13GHz Pentium 3 with 256MB
of RAM and has a single 40GB IDE hard disk. In preperation for moving to a more
reliable colocate facility, I decided it was time to replace the server with a
newer, faster, better system. The replacements I have been considering range
from:
A modest upgrade: $1,300
CPU: 2.8GHz Pentium 4
RAM: 1GB PC3200
HDD: 80GB SATA-150, 7200 RPM
A huge upgrade: $2,500
CPU: 2x 2.0GHz Opteron
RAM: 2GB PC3200
HDD: 73GB Ultra320 SCSI RAID 0, 10000 RPM
Once the new server is setup, I will be shipping it to a colocate facility
where it will live in a 19" rack in happy climate-controlled room with its
very own 1Mbps connection. The colocate costs me $60/month, some (but definitely
not all) of that cost is paid by other users of 13th-floor.org. Any money
received beyond the $60/month colocation fee will be used for hardware upgrades.
